예멘에서 기자로 활동했던 이스마일. 2015년 3월 예멘 내전이 본격화되면서 이스마일이 다니던 신문사도 문을 닫았다. 이스마일은 2016년 12월 예멘을 탈출했다. 지금은 제주의 한 게스트하우스에 머물고 있다. 한국에서 난민 지위를 인정받게 되길 기다리는 중이다. 그가 직접 쓰는 예멘 안팎의 이야기를 10여 회에 걸쳐 게재한다. 기사에 함께 담을 짧은 본인소개 문구를 부탁하자 이스마일은 "나는 오직 사람일 뿐"이라며, "그것으로 충분하다"고 답했다.<편집자 주>

예멘의 상황을 압축해서 설명할 수 없다는 것이 예멘의 비극 중 하나다. 이제 예멘이 처한 전쟁과 공포, 그리고 굶주림을 묘사하는 것은 매우 어려운 일이다.

후티 반군의 쿠데타는 예멘 정부의 실정과 함께 악화되고 있다. 전쟁으로 인한 피난행렬도 계속 이어지고 있다.

예멘 국민들에게는 예멘을 떠나는 것 말고는 다른 선택지가 없다.

매일 뉴스를 통해 예멘의 내전으로 인해 죽은 희생자들의 사진들, 납치당한 이들의 사진들, 실종된 이들의 사진들과 게다가, 폭격으로 인해 파괴되어버린 주택과 가족들의 사진들을 보게 된다.

생명줄이 어디에 있는지 아는 사람은 아무도 없다. 심지어 정치인들도 모두 혼란에 빠졌다. 후티 반군은 전쟁에 무관심한 아이들과 청년들을 전쟁터로 내몰았다. 예멘의 미래인 그들에게 안전한 지역은 없다.

후티 반군의 2014년 10월 21일 쿠데타와 2015년 3월 25일 전쟁선포 이후 지금까지 예멘 국민들은 종전이나 자구책을 전망할 수 없는 무기력한 상태에 놓여있다.

그렇게 후티 반군과 극단주의자들이 가진 야욕은 우리로 하여금 우리의 나라를 낯설게 만들었다.

예멘은 지금 많은 질병이 창궐했던 중세 시대만큼 비극적이다. 어느 나라든 전쟁이 일어나면 그 나라의 국민들은 이와 같은 비참을 목도하게 된다.

이제 진실을 말할 수 있는 사람은 아무도 없다.

위에 언급한 것들보다 실로 비참한 것은 여러모로 예멘 내전이 국제 사회의 침묵 아래 모든 예멘인들을 통제하고 있다는 것이다.<이스마일>

Since the Houthi coup in Yemen on 21 September 2014 and the launching of the war on 25 March 2015 and until now the Yemeni people are in a state of helplessness can not see the end or salvation from war.

Thus, the ambitions of Houthi and extremist groups to take us to see our country as strange.

To the extent that many of the diseases that emerged in the Middle Ages it's in Yemen now it is really sad when you see your country like this because of the war.

No one can tell the truth now.
