여러분 모두가 알다시피, 미디어는 삶의 모든 영역에 영향을 미치는 가장 중요한 요소 중 하나가 되었습니다. 미디어는 사회의 모든 곳에서 중요한 역할을 하고 있습니다. 또한 현대 사회에서 정보와 뉴스를 얻는 가장 중요한 채널 중 하나입니다. 

항상 스스로에게 묻습니다: 미디어에서 다루는 것이 사실이 아니라면, 미디어는 무엇일까요? 미디어가 다루는 사건이 사람, 그리고 인류와 관련되어 있다면, 그리고 이들을 미디어가 돕고 보호하지 않는다면 미디어는 어떤 존재입니까? 

오늘날 미디어는 TV, 라디오, 신문, 소셜 미디어 등 다양한 분야에서 모든 사건과 이슈에 대해 여론을 형성하고 대중들의 의견을 도출해 해는 유일한 수단입니다. 미디어의 여론 형성에는 두 가지의 완전히 다른 방법이 있습니다. 첫 번째는 대중과 독자를 위한 서비스 제공, 그리고 교육입니다. 두번째는 대중의 목소리를 관련자와 전문가에게 전달하는 역할입니다.

미디어의 주된 목적은 여론입니다. 뉴스, 상업매체, 혹은 다른 것이든 간에, 미디어의 정체성을 결정짓는 가장 중요한 것은 여론 토론입니다. 

오늘 우리는 예멘 난민 이슈에 대한 미디어와 한국의 민낯에 대해 논의하기 위해 모였습니다. 제 머리를 지배하는 많은 질문과 사색 끝에, 저는 다음과 같은 정보를 얻었습니다: 4월 18일 예멘 난민들이 처음 이 섬에 들어왔지만, 예멘 난민들에 대한 첫 번째 뉴스는 지난 5월 2일 지역 신문에 보도되었습니다. 그 후 적어도 한 달 이상, 7월 14일까지는 예멘 난민 이슈가 언론에서 제기되지 않았습니다. 여러분들은 지난 7월 말, 어떤 사건이 일어났는지 다들 아실 겁니다. 예멘 난민 문제가 다시 부각되면서 많은 한국인들이 예멘난민들이 한국 땅에 체류하는 것을 반대하고 그들을 가짜 난민이라고 불렀습니다. 

한 달 동안 한국 언론은 어디에 있었습니까? 관심 없습니다. 제가 관심있게 보는 것은 예멘 난민의 미디어의 조명을 받은 후 다른 각도에서 이들에게 어떤 일이 일어났는지 다루는 것들입니다. 대부분 좋은 연구 보고서, 그리고 기사들입니다. 인도주의적 목적이든 언론플레이의 목적이든, 나는 한국 언론이 예멘 피난민들의 이야기를 대중에게 전달하는 중요한 창구임을 부정하지 않습니다.  

예멘 난민이슈는 인도주의적 문제이지 언론의 도구가 아닙니다. 예멘이 인권협약에 서명했다는 것을 알고 있습니까? 예멘은 아프리카 지역의 중심지였고, 수십 년 동안 아프리카 국가로부터 100만 명 이상의 아프리카 난민을 받아왔습니다. 전쟁 전에는 팔레스타인, 이라크, 시리아에서 온 난민들 또한 받아왔습니다. 예멘은 누구 앞에서도 문을 닫지 않았습니다. 하지만 세계의 대부분은 전쟁 시작부터 지금까지 예멘의 난민들에게 문을 닫았습니다. 이 섬이 500명의 예멘 난민들에게 개방된 것은 매우 공정했습니다. 

저는 이 섬에 있는 유일한 기자 출신 예멘인이 아닙니다. 저를 제외하고 2명의 기자가 더 있지만, 다른 둘은 영어를 하지 못합니다. 그들은 나보다 기자 경험이 많습니다. 우리가 예멘에서 일했던 보도국은 전쟁으로 문을 닫았습니다. 

기자 친구들에게 의견을 묻자, 그들은 "우리는 잘 모른다. 언어의 장벽으로 우리 주변에서 일어나고 있는 일을 이해할 수 없다” 고 했습니다. 하지만 제 친구들은 중요한 부분을 말해주었습니다: 한국 언론은 우리를 인도주의적 문제로 다루어야 하며, 우리의 목소리를 놓치지 말아야 합니다. 그들은 우리들의 문제를 수용하고 사회가 우리를 받아들일 수 있도록 영향을 주어야 합니다.  

출입국사무소의 예멘인들에 대한 취업허가 이후 언론의 압박은 심해졌습니다. 매일 아침 출입국사무소 앞에 많은 취재진들이 있는 것에 놀랐지만, 나중에는 단 몇 명의 취재진들 만이 남아 있었습니다.

한국의 미디어와 관계자분들께, 예멘의 상황과 여기 있는 난민의 상황을 잘 이해해 주시길 바랍니다. 이전 일이 기억납니다. 저는 다른 난민의 언론 인터뷰 통역을 위해 한국 남자 분과 함께 있었습니다. 

그 난민은 후티(예멘 정부에 대한 반란을 일으킨 후세인 바드레딘 알후티를 말한다. 편집자 주.)에 대해 말하고 있었습니다. 내가 한국 기자에게 전달하자, 그 기자가 제게 물었습니다. "후티가 누구죠?" 저는 인터뷰를 중단해야 했고 한국 기자 분은 사과했습니다. 그는 예멘 상황에 대해 아무 것도 알아보지 않은 것 같았지만, 예멘 난민 인터뷰를 하러 왔습니다. 

이상하지 않나요? 더욱 이상한 점은, 이틀 후 그 기자가 저희들을 스스로 뭐라고 부르고 있는지 제게 물어왔다는 것입니다. 나는 너무 놀랐습니다. 그 기자가 우리를 인도적인 문제가 아닌 폭력조직(gang)으로 대한다고 생각했습니다. 나는 침착하게 대답했습니다: 우리는 갱단이 아닙니다, 그런 건 존재하지 않습니다. 

또한, 한국 신문이 예멘 난민들을 어떻게 대우했는지 잊지 말아야 합니다. 그들은 이익을 위해 예멘 난민들의 이전 사진을 신문에 기재했습니다. 그리고 아래에는 이렇게 설명했습니다: 예멘 난민들이 거리에서 잔다. 이 사진은 출입국사무소 앞에서 기다리고 있는 사진이었습니다. 

우리는 한국 미디어가 유명한 아랍채널 보도에서 우리들의 얼굴을 노출했다고 폭로했던 때를 잊어서는 안 됩니다. 우리는 두려움 때문에 어떤 아랍 채널도 만나는 것을 거부했지만, 인터뷰 진행자가 한국 기자였기 때문에 속았습니다. 

마지막으로, 저는 모든 사람들이 예멘과 제주도의 상황을 잘 살펴보고 인도주의적 이슈로 다루기를 바랍니다. 그 이상은 바라지 않습니다. 2014년 한국 중학생이 익사했을 때의 경우처럼 , 확실한 결론이 나오지 않았을 경우 사건을 조사하고 또 동정하는 것을 계속하지 않길 바랍니다. 

여러분들이 우리를 위해 해결책을 찾고 또 공정한 결과를 얻기를 바랍니다. 
또 대중들에게 인류가 다른 무엇보다도 우선이라고 알려주시기 바랍니다.

As you all know, media is now one of the most important elements that affect all areas of life. Media plays an important role within every society and is one of the most important means of our contemporary life to obtain information and news.

I always ask myself: What is the media if it’s not a case? What is the media if it does not support people and humanity in all cases related to people and humanity?

Media is now the only means of affecting the formation of public thought and the victory of public opinion in all events and issues in various fields in the TV, radio, newspapers and social media.

Media has two completely different ways of having the same effect. The first way is to serve the public, the recipients and the education, while the second way is to communicate the voice of the people to those concerned and specialists.

The main aim of the media is public opinion, whether it news, commercial or other media. The most important thing that determines the identity of the media is the public opinion debate.

We are here today because of an issue in the media and the Korean reality, the issue of Yemeni refugees after a long search and many questions that dominated my head got certain information such as: Despite the fact that the first Yemeni refugees who entered the island was on the 18th of last April, but the first news about the Yemeni refugees was in a local newspaper on the second of last May and then the issue of Yemeni refugees disappeared from the Korean media for more than a month until the fourteenth of last July and you all know what's happened in last July.

The issue of the Yemeni refugees returned to light and resulted in a lot of Koreans against their presence on Korean land and called them fake refugees.

In a full month where was the Korean media? I do not care what I care about is what happened after shedding light on the issue of Yemeni refugees from different angles, mostly looking for a good report or get media action.

I will never cancel the important and prominent role played by the Korean media so far in transmitting the stories of the Yemeni refugees to Korean public opinion, whether by humanitarian treatment or media dealings.

We are a humanitarian issue and not a media material. So does the Korean media know that Yemen is a signatory to human rights? Yemen has been a regional center for Africa and has received over a million African refugees from several African countries in decades, yet we also have experience with refugees from Palestine, Iraq and Syria before the war in yemen.

Yemen, has not closed its door in font of anyone most of the world closed it’s doors to Yemeni refugees from the start of the war until now in Yemen .. It was very fair that the doors of this island opened to almost 500 Yemeni refugees.

I am not the only journalist on this island from Yemenis. We are three, but the others don’t speak English. They are more experienced than me. All the companies in which we worked in Yemen closed because of the war.

When I asked my friends about their opinion, they said, "We do not know, we do not follow, we do not have a language to understand what is going on around us, but they have important points, such as: the Korean media should treat us as a humanitarian issue and our Korean media colleagues should not lose sight of our voices in the media. They must influence the acceptance of our issues and society's acceptance of us.

I return to the media pressure that took place after the Emigration office's decision to allow the Yemenis to work and what happened next. Every morning I was surprised by the presence of a number of media people in front of the Emigration office but later disappeared, so that only a few journalists remained.

What we really want from the Korean media and the Korean media brothers is to study the situation well in Yemen and the situation of the Yemeni refugees here. As I remember once, I was translating for another refugee an interview like a newspaper interview with a Korean man.

The Yemeni refugee spoke about the Houthis. When I translated the Korean journalist asked: who are the Houthis?. I had to stop the interview and the Korean apologized. It seems that he did not study anything about the situation in Yemen, but he came to make interview with Yemeni refugees.

Is not that strange? What is stranger is that he wrote me two days later to ask me what you are calling yourselves? I was so surprised that I think that man is dealing with us as a gang, not a humanitarian issue. I replied calmly: We are not a gang, there is nothing like that.

Also, do not forget what a Korean newspaper recently did when it published an old picture of Yemeni refugees and said in its report: Yemeni refugees sleep in the streets and the old picture was in front of the Emigration office.

We must not forget what one of the famous Arab channels did when the Korean media quoted a report on the refugees and revealed their faces. We refuse to meet any Arab channel because of our fears, but we were deceived because the interviewer was a Korean journalist.

Finally, I hope that everyone will study the situation well in Yemen and here and deal with us as a humanitarian issue no more than that and I hope that the Korean media will not repeat the method of investigation and sympathy also without result, as happened with the case of Korean secondary students who drowned in 2014.

I hope you will push our cause to find solutions and fair results for all and tell the public that humanity is above all else.
